No fixed class schedules. No waiting for an instructor. Just structured, AHA-aligned training you complete on your terms.

Self Guided Learning in Bakersfield

What Is Self-Guided Learning?

Self-Guided Learning™ is an American Heart Association course format that pairs online cognitive learning with a self-guided skills session. Learners complete both components independently and, upon successful completion, receive an American Heart Association Course Completion eCard.

This approach works differently from traditional classroom learning or blended learning, where an instructor leads or evaluates skills. With Self-Guided Learning courses, you control the pace—from the online portion to the hands-on skills session.

The Self-Guided Learning course format is available for three core American Heart Association programs:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – Required for nurses, physicians, EMTs, and most clinical staff
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – For healthcare professionals managing cardiac arrest and advanced airway situations
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – For providers treating critically ill infants and children

Staff at Kern Medical, a 222-bed Level II Trauma Center serving Kern County, and healthcare professionals throughout Bakersfield rely on these credentials to meet hospital and employment requirements.

How the Course Works: 3 Steps

The Self-Guided Learning process at Safety Training Seminars follows a clear, three-step pathway.

Step 1: Complete the Online Learning Activity

The online portion uses True Adaptive™ learning powered by Area9 Lyceum. This technology continuously assesses your knowledge and confidence, then adjusts the content path based on your responses. It focuses on areas where you need more practice and moves faster through material you already understand.

You can access the course on any compatible device—desktop, laptop, or tablet—at any time. Most learners finish the online component in one to three hours, depending on the course.

Step 2: Complete the Self-Guided Skills Session

Once you finish the online learning activity, you schedule your hands-on skills session at the CPR Verification Station™ learning center at the Bakersfield location on 24th Street. The session typically takes about 30 minutes.

During the self-guided skills session, you perform required psychomotor skills—compressions, ventilations, and two-rescuer CPR—on a Voice-Assisted Manikin (VAM). The CPR Verification Station learning center provides real-time, objective performance feedback on compression depth, rate, recoil, and ventilation. There is no instructor present. You complete the session independently, and you may repeat practice as needed until you achieve a passing score.

Step 3: Receive Your American Heart Association Course Completion eCard

After successfully completing both the online learning activity and the self-guided skills session, you receive your American Heart Association Course Completion eCard the same day. The eCard serves as verification of successful BLS, ACLS, or PALS training completion and is valid for two years.

Who Benefits from Self-Guided Learning in Bakersfield?

The Self-Guided Learning course option fits a wide range of healthcare professionals across Kern County.

  • Hospital staff at facilities like Kern Medical who need to renew BLS, ACLS, or PALS credentials without taking a full day off
  • Nurses and physicians at outpatient clinics, urgent care centers, and specialty practices throughout Bakersfield
  • EMTs and paramedics with demanding shift schedules who cannot commit to fixed classroom times
  • Medical and nursing students completing clinical rotation requirements
  • Healthcare workers in rural areas of Kern County who previously had to travel long distances for in-person training

The flexibility of Self-Guided Learning courses removes the biggest barrier to staying current with American Heart Association training: finding time in a busy schedule.
